Democrats Look to Lessen Minority in House and Senate Following Bartlet's successful budget and Speaker Hafley poor leadership during the shutdown, Democrats have the momentum going into the next midterms. Bartlet's approval rating is still inflated from the kidnapping of Zoey Bartlet. After the budget, the Presidents approval is higher than it has been for most his term. However, the question becomes can the democratic party overcome the Republicans majority in either the House or Senate. In the Senate the Republicans hold a 57 seat majority, and in the House hold a 228 seat majority. Many political analyst agree that the Democratic party will come out winning a few seats, and doubt the Republicans will lose the majority. The DNC chair has said that they will be heavily pushing the House race, and expect to win a few seats in the Senate. When Speaker Hafley was asked about the possibility of losing the House he said, "We will retain the Majority these midterms...We have the vision for America the President and his party lacks."
One senate race may catch all our eyes. Rumors about a possible Sam Seaborn run for Senate in California. If he does decide to run it will be against long time popular incumbent Senate Arnold Vinick. This race could get very interesting. While Sam Seaborn did loose by a wide margin in Orange County, early polls show him trailing Vinick by no more than 8 percent with as many as 16 percent undecided in the race. It is expected that Sam Seaborn, President Bartlet's former Deputy Communication Director and protégé, would get the president's support in this race. The president's approval rating in California has been polled at a high 62% state wide, much higher than it was when Sam ran in the heavily republican Orange County two years ago. While no official announcements have been made, this is definitely a story to keep our eyes on.
